What Is MCE / SCE Insurance?

Marine Cum Erection (MCE) and Storage Cum Erection (SCE) Insurance provides combined coverage for goods in transit via marine routes and the subsequent storage, installation, and testing of machinery and equipment at the project site. When businesses import heavy plant, industrial machinery, or engineering equipment, they face a complex chain of risk across multiple legs — sea transit, storage, land transport, erection, and commissioning. Standard marine or erection policies cover only single legs. MCE and SCE policies bridge this gap with continuous, end-to-end all-risk protection on a single combined policy.

Phase 01

Sea Transit

Cover begins as cargo is loaded at the factory/port of origin and continues through international sea voyage to the Nigerian port of entry.

Phase 02

Port Storage

Equipment awaiting customs clearance or collection at the port is covered against fire, theft, flood, and accidental damage during storage.

Phase 03

Inland Transit

Cover continues as equipment moves by road or rail from port to the project site, including multiple deliveries and off-loading operations.

Phase 04

Erection on Site

All-risk protection during the physical assembly, installation, and erection of machinery and plant at the insured project site.

Phase 05

Testing & Commissioning

Cover extends through hot and cold commissioning tests, trial runs, and final acceptance, until the equipment is handed over for operation.

MCE vs SCE — What’s the Difference?

Both policies deliver end-to-end cover but differ in where the journey begins. Choose the policy that matches your equipment’s procurement route.

MCE

Marine Cum Erection

Cover starts at sea, factory to commissioning

  • Cover begins at the supplier’s factory or port of loading overseas
  • International sea voyage covered under marine all-risk terms
  • Port storage and customs holding period included
  • Inland transit by road or rail to project site
  • Erection, installation, and assembly on site
  • Hot and cold commissioning and testing period
  • Third-party liability option during erection (extension)
SCE

Storage Cum Erection

Cover starts at storage, warehouse to commissioning

  • Cover begins at a bonded warehouse, port, or inland storage facility
  • Equipment already in Nigeria, awaiting installation or project readiness
  • Storage risks: fire, theft, flood, storm, accidental damage
  • Inland transit from storage to project site
  • Full erection and installation phase covered
  • Testing, trial runs, and commissioning until handover
  • Suitable for multi-year storage-to-erection projects

All-Risk Cover, What Is and Isn’t Included

MCE/SCE are “all risks” policies, any accidental loss or damage is covered unless specifically excluded in the policy schedule.

Covered Risks

  • Accidental loss or damage during sea transit
  • Fire, lightning, and explosion at any phase
  • Jettison, washing overboard, and general average
  • Storm, flood, and water damage
  • Theft and pilferage during transit or storage
  • Collision and vehicle impact during inland transit
  • Collapse of scaffolding or lifting equipment
  • Human error during erection and installation
  • Short-circuit and electrical damage during testing
  • Removal of debris after an insured loss

Key Exclusions

  • Wear and tear, rust, and gradual deterioration
  • Inherent vice or defects existing before cover starts
  • War, hostilities, and nuclear risks
  • Wilful misconduct or gross negligence
  • Inventory shortages without evidence of theft
  • Consequential loss and delay penalties
  • Defective design (faulty part or component only)
  • Marine risks after discharge (covered by erection section)
  • Radioactive contamination
  • Loss of earnings or business interruption
